I can argue that your first point is a good point because it means they give you what's on the record.

I can argue that your second point is a good point because it reduces the level of early reflections in relation to the direct sound, and that reduces the impact of the room on the sound.

As for your 3rd point, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. I don't find them ugly but I also don't find them attractive or beautiful. I'd say plain rather than ugly.
