Klaus:I think this is not a problem for most of the drivers.
I have been interested in speaker behaviour at low and very low signal levels. There is a simple test for low level performance. A driver is attenuated with a voltage divider so that signal power is 0.1-10 mW. Then you listen with your ear very close and make your judgement.
I made several conclusions from this test:
1. Even at a fraction of a milliwatt, there is not much distortion. Music remains music even at the threshold of ear sensitivity. I could use most of the drivers as headphones. For many drivers, extremely low levels are quite enjoyable.
2. Low sensitivity drivers have coloration (frequency response) issues at very low levels. But there is nothing like drastic onset of distortion at certain threshold that you are talking about.
3. High sensitivity drivers perform the best in this test.
