I believe I owned that model in college. Their sound is rich with a sense of pretty good bottom end, not 30Hz, but still a pretty good reach into the bass region. I ran them with a Yamaha CR440 (I believe) and that was a pretty good sound.
Regarding SET tubes, I am guessing that you might be able to run them with SETs with no immediately obvious problems. However, it might strain the amplifier in a way that shortens its life, or more likely you'll miss out on the dynamics that a more powerful solid state (or tube) amplifier might provide.
Whatever you do, I hope you enjoy your choice.
