Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Anyone (else) running two different pairs of speakers at once?

I stumbled upon a great deal on a pair of AR 2Ax speakers at a garage sale ($30!). Just for fun, I hooked them up in place of my De Capos and was blown away by the improvement in the low end, particularly in the upper bass. The AR's larger cabinet and 10" drivers provide a warmth and fullness the De Capos just dont have; basses (electric and acoustic) sound fuller up and down the neck, and orchestral music, too, sounds much warmer and 'rounder' if you will. When I switched back to the De Capos, they were more open sounding, with a crisper attack and better retrieval of transients and ambient cues (reverbs, etc.) but they sounded thin by comparison (even with my Rava sub added into the mix).

Ultimately, I found myself feeling less than satisied by either pair (the ARs are warm, but a bit too laid back; the De Capos are very detailed and open sounding, but lacking in upper bass). So, brilliant me, I decided to try hooking them both up at the same time (in fact, I put the DCs on top of the ARs because they're the same height as my stands).

I have to say, the combination is pretty great. I think I lose a tad bit of openness of the De Capos alone, but the added warmth of the ARs has completely altered the overall sound in the room; I no longer notice any of the upper mid/lower treble emphasis of the De Capos that used to annoy me when listening to the De Capos only. Overall, the combination of both speakers really is better than either pair alone.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried this, and to what effect? Thanks,

Jon
