I believe it should be two way speaker vs. three or multi ways speakers instead bookself vs. floorstanding speakers. The monitor usually are two way speakers, the crossover is simpler tham three or multi way speakers, but less bass. That is where the floor standing speakers come in, but three or multi way speakers have a tall task of corssover design. It has two crossover points in three ways than only one crosspoint in a two way crossover design. Crossover is the main problems for speaker design.
There are some very slim two way floor standing speakers, it is just like a good two way speaker with extended box to the floor. It give more internal volume and produce lower bass.
Think about it, the space below a small bookself minitor is not useable anyway, plus there is extra expense on a good stable speaker stand. If you like bookself monitor speakers, you should try the two way slim floor standing speakers. Some of them sound really good. It could be the best of the two world!
