Hi Frank,
I've not heard the 826 but I imagine it's as you say, same sound, more bass. The 816S goes down to about 42hz, not exactly full range. The quality of the bass is amazing. It is tight as a nut and has great punch. Drums have real impact. They also can really hang an instrument in it's own space with no phasing or smearing of the sound. I'm a classical nut but I've been listening to a LOT more rock albums since getting these speakers. They work very well with rock music, to say the least.
