I would buy an old pair of AR or Dynaco off ebay. If you like that sound and want that sound, why ruin modern drivers to get there?There is a certain warmth in the older units, but put them next to a modern speaker and you will note large amounts of detail mush and a pronounced boxy bass.
If you really want to build some new ones, some of WayneJ's designs on the partsexpress showcase use inexpensive drivers and have that sound.
