Re- your last message, I actually had better music results with the original Sub 6 vs. the newer 6i- Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it does increase the odds that can get better results.The 6 would actually have an easier time in your room than the new 6i. Atleast based on my experiences.
As for your source: Consider splurging $50-$100 for one of those bargain DVD players on the market right now, preferrably one with a coax digital audio output.
Then hook this up to your Onkyo 502 thru that digital and re-evaluate the system. In this situation, the DVD player is acting as a transport only and letting the receiver do the rest of the work. For your situation, that could be worth the stretch. Just don't forget to check the player's configuration menu so that the receiver isn't getting shortchanged. Many players are defaulted to downconvert/downsample and otherwise mess with the digital feed unless you tell them not to.
