Re: Red Rose R3 speakers, a look under the "hood"

"They are acurate and coherent. My they didn't stir my emotions, however, and I dont know why. Perhaps somthing to do with the ribon tweeter. They lack a viseral quality I can't identify yet."

Same here, based on my audition of the Red Rose speakers. The speakers produced a stunning performance, regardless of their size. As open and airy sounding speaker as you will ever find. I also found the bass region to have excellent impact and presence. I think it was the tonal balance (or tonal rendering) that kept me from being swept away emotionally. They were a little *too* airy. Almost slightly bleached sounding, tending to lack some of the richness you get with some other speakers (for instance, the darker hued, midrange-rich tonality of many Sonus Faber speakers).
Imagine the sonic presentation of a Proac speaker, but sprayed with a fine, white mist to lighten the picture. That's the Red Rose sound I heard. Also, strangely enough, while the soundstage was huge, and the sonic images completely detached from the speakers, I felt I heard a slightly boxy quality to some of the vocals. I dunno.

Still, these speakers were absolutely stunning performers. I've heard the Proac Future speakers twice now (which share the same airy type of sonic signature as the Red Rose speakers) and I'd choose the Red Rose over the Futures in a heartbeat.

But, that's from a single store audition of the Red Rose stuff. Hardly a definitive opinion. For what it's worth.
