Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Well let me put it like this

Warm doesn't come to mind when I hear live. Bob Neill describes it best below, yes a sense of ease. Many audio systems don't get this sense of ease and poor close miked recordings don't help matters much either. So far as the Merlins having a sense of ease, I think they do but I do understand that some like a pulled back presentation and this is the reason some don't like them. I feel they are more neutral than most in this regard, truer to the recording and on some recordings its as though you are right in front of the performers, the "in your face" comments pertain to this impression I believe not to mention components that would highlight this more than others. It isn't the speakers so much as the recording IMO. They can present music "laid back" if it is so recorded but could never be characterized as a laid back speaker. I have gotten to a point where I don't analyze the sound but just recognize the limitations in the recordings and enjoy the music since I've gotten the system to where it currently is. It took plenty of effort and experimenting but it most certainly was worth the journey. These speakers taught me a bundle about reproduced music.

Characteristic warmth and forgiving is just plain boring. Over time it constantly brings attention to itself and the limitations of the system.
