Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Merlin, Sonus Faber, B&W, Martin Logan

I've heard all the above and have owned the VSM's for 4 years. The point is that all these speakers have a different presentation. I personally don't care for the ML's, don't like the bass integration with the panels and never did. The 802's are very nice speakers, with bigger bass than any of the other 3 but I was never enthralled with the upper frequency presentation, probably didn't ever hear them with the right amp. The Cremonas are VERY nice speakers, warm and inviting and also somewhat laid back. The Merlins I've already commented on numerous times. They still amaze me but because I really like their presentation, not everyone will. Their resolution (some call it detail but it is much more than that with the proper components) is definitely at the head of the class in this group. Their ability to truly present a 3 dimensional soundstage and recreate the venue is only surpassed by a few speakers in my experience and none of these are dynamic designs. In your face? no, immediate, definitely so. The point is that you will have to listen and decide for yourself which of these you would prefer based on how you want to hear music. Forget the wholesale "hi-fi" comments about speakers, it IS Hi-Fi, you want to hear real music? Go to a jazz club, rock concert or other venue where it is presented. Real music doesn't sound warm and forgiving to me but it is amazing how often "musical" is attributed to those reproduced characteristics.
