KEF 104.2 evolution & imaging

64.109.164.99

I auditioned a pair of KEF 104.2 w/ bi-wire connectors. (Not to be confused with my posting about 107's the other day). What a beautiful sound. But the imaging was vague, especially compared to reviews read here and elsewhere and compared to some B&W nautilus 804s.

So I was wondering if there were different versions of the 104.2's and if maybe the bi-wire version was known to be poorer or same or better. Oh...I auditioned *without* the KUBE. There were also some Thiels there that I played briefly as a check, and they imaged well.

What other explanations might there be? We double check correct polarity of connections. As I said, there were the Thiels as a check. The setup was a dedicated, quiet, carpeted room roughly 11' wide and 18 feet long. The speakers were across the 11' width, about 4 feet from the front wall, 2 or 3 from the side wall, about 7 feet aparat with nothing between them. The seat was about 9 feet away, about 6 feet from the back wall. Levinson amps, transparent (brand) cables, etc.

Could room resonances in the midrange (or other acoustics) hide imaging on the KEF and not the Thiel?

It sounded like it _wanted_ to image, and did better at higher volumes, and what image it had was stable, but it seemed hidden. This is distinct to my ears from other speakers I've auditioned that had unstable images (would fly apart as the music content changed) or that just oozed all over the place.

Wracking my brains to reconcile what I heard against the reputation. (That sounds like flame bait, but isn't meant to be.)
