Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Have owned both DIY Dynaudios and Contour 1.8MkIIs...

and heard their very best (Evidence, Temptation, Confidence). Having owned two pairs I have to say that I do like the Dynaudio house sound. They are very neutral and have nice midrange and surprising bass for the size of the drivers employed. Also, they are relatively low in distortion and have none of the nasty colorations that many other speakers unfortuanately have. The downside is that they do not come to life at low levels at all (This is not true for the Evidence but at $80,000 a pair I should hope not) and don't sound really good at very high levels either. In my opinion the biggest problem with Dynaudios, and most low efficiency current hungry speakers, is that they only sound good at a middle level of volume (say from about 80 to 90 db) and below this level sound lifeless and above tend to sound hard. This seems to suggest a rather limited dynamic range best suited to heavily compressed rock/pop/electronic music (in fact I sold my Contour 1.8mkIIs to a friend who only listens to this type of music and he loves them) where a consistent level allows them to sound their best. At low levels (both at late night listening and low level passages in relatively uncompressed music) there are no dynamics and details are lost. I think this has a lot to do with a minimal amount of energy needed just to make the drivers move and respond to subtle inputs. If your tastes run more towards classical music then I suggest you look for a more senistive speaker that can respond dynamically to the subtle changes in music (or a good ribbon or electrostatic) as a opposed to a low sensitivity low impedance loudspeaker. For about the same money a VMPS ribbon monitor will outperform the equivalently priced Dynaudio IMO.
