I built these monsters a little over a year ago. Up until recently when I separated my HT and music system, I did not really know how good they were. Since I added a Monarchy Audio SE Class A Delux Monoblock, and an Aragon Aurum pre-amp, I now know what they can do. I hesitated on doing this review, because these are not manufactured speakers. But it is an attempt at letting someone know with the right measuring equipment, xo optimization software, and a good box program, what you can do.(And you can be of lower intelligence like me also). Also takes some cabinet making skills unless you can get someone else to do them. I did this because I could not afford speakers that I really liked.
The speakers consist of (2) Dynaudio 17W75ext 6.5" mid-woofers, and the Esotec D-260 tweeter in a sealed box. The box has 6 layers of 30-lb. roofing felt to all walls as a dampening effect. Have braces every 8-10", staggered. These babies are heavy. Use 1st order on both woofer and tweeter, although the woofer is not technically 1st because of a notch filter that runs parallel and series that corrects a spike at 250 Hz. Also have an impedance compensation to get rid of the rising impedance due to rising VC impedance. Have resonance compensation on the tweeter. The xo is CALSOD optimized.
Performance. Very smooth and neutral. Does vocals in my opinion better than any other driver,(speaking of Dynaudio as a whole). Pretty flat down to 50 Hz, but does sound a little lean with certain types of music, like classic rock, and full scale orchestra. These speakers have excellent low-level detail for cone/dome drivers. Very wide horizontal dispersion. Wide/deep/high soundstage. Very good imaging. The D-260 tweeter is my favorite among tweeters. I feel it comes very close to ribbons, but not quite. The air that they produce is what I like most.
To sum this up, I am hooked on Dynaudio's signature sound. It is completely un-colored.
