Re: Sol 5.0

I have a pair of the 5.0's, and have had the behind a Sonic Frontiers amp and the Anthem amp-1. Use either a Quicksilver linstage preamp or a Conrad Johnson PV10AL line stage preamp. The mids are among the best I've heard, and the bass is extremely tight down to about 50Hz. They seem to sound better with the CJ preamp than the Quicksilver. Playing acoustic jazz they are about as good as it gets. Don't seem tobe all that picky about placement, and probably are at their best with a 24 to 26 inch tall stand. I had mine on 29 inch stands and they were fine at that hight too, but still think three or four inches shorter would have been better. I might add that they are a very turntable friendly speaker.
I am in the process of moving mine upstairs into a system of ASL wave eights and an ASL 2004 preamp. I replaced them with a pair of MeadowLark Kestrel Hot Rods. They have a little more bass than the 5.0's, and seem tobe warmer. The highs are thiner with the Kestrels, and somewhat more open. On the otherhand the 5.0's seem to hit a little harder in the upper mids and have a touch more weight to the mids. Now this may be in the cables I'm using (Audioquest Slates), and am still experimenting with speaker placement. I loved my 5.0's, and the only thing different I'd have done was to maybe add a quality sub.
