First off, I should mention that I didn’t buy the 70’s. I was on holidays on the opposite coast, so didn’t want to ship them back and wasn’t quite ready to buy. While I was looking for a pair a little closer to home, I came across a good deal on a pair of Vandersteen 3s and I’m still happy with them 2+ years later. If I stumbled into a used pair of 70s or 72s in my neighbourhood, I’d snap them up in a second though.Tube amps aren’t my specialty, but I’d look into not-too-romantic ones like Sonic Frontiers, Rogue or VTL in the 70+ wpc range. I suspect that they would sound great with a solid state amp in the 100+ wpc category like the Classe CAP 151 or perhaps a Bryston 3BST with tube pre. I’m sure there are many possibilities – try doing a search on Audience and amp in the Speaker/Amp asylums and see what others are using.
If you have a local dealer that carries the 72s, see if they’ll let you bring your amp in for a trial run. You might want to audition the 60s while you’re at it - some folks prefer them and they may be more room-friendly in your situation.
