Re: Morel mid dome in TL

I haven't tried putting a large dome driver into a TL, but that ought to sound great. On the other hand, recognize that power handling will be decreased at low frequencies relative to a sealed enclsoure. And, don't expect the transmission line to appreciably extend the driver's response downward.

I'd suggest a line about 40 inches long. This corresponds to 1/2 wavelength at 170 Hz. You could try a 1/4 wavelength line of course, but I personally prefer 1/2 wavelength lines (which are impractically large at bass frequencies). You might as well taper the line to maximally stagger the resonances - a roughly 4 to 1 taper ratio should work well. So if the driver end of the line is four times the dome's area, taper it to about equal to the dome's area at the open end. A minimum-area line would be about 1.5 times the dome area just behind the driver, tapering to about .4 times the dome area at the open end. Be sure to allow access to the line so you can experiment and see what damping material and stuffing profile sounds best.

I used transmission lines behind ribbon drivers in several systems I built during the 80's. The result was very smooth and uncolored sound, but like I said don't look to the transmission line to significantly extend the bottom end of a midrange driver.

Best of luck to you in your project!
