Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Budget?

It looks like you're in the under $1000 range, but I'm not sure.

The Audio Refinement is a great integrated, and as was stated above, a bit warm. I own Triangle Titus 202's, and have listened to them with the Audio Refinement. That combo sounds fantastic with Jazz. Did you audition them to determine that they were too bright? I do suspect that they are slightly tipped up in the mid-treble, but I haven't seen any measurements to confirm this. It's tough to say because they are very fast speakers which retrieve a great amount of detail, which makes them sound a bit thin compared to other speakers. Whether that's good or bad is relative. I will say that the build quality on the Triangles is great. Cast woofer baskets, sinks for the screws which hold the drivers to the enclosure, and what look like quality components in a simple crossover (all have the Triangle brand name on them). Break in is important with the Titus, it really does get less lean as time goes on.

A speaker which isn't on your list but should be is the Axiom Audio M22ti. Factory direct for $400 with a 30 money back guarantee. You could spend a lot more for speakers that aren't as good.

If your budget extends a bit higher, take a look at Meadowlark Swifts. I listened to them for about an hour at a dealer with B&K seperates and an Arcam Diva 92. The room was small, and I listened very near field, but I enjoyed them. I wished that I could have had time to compare them to a speaker that I knew better, but if I was buying speakers under $1000, they would be on my list. A bonus is that they are small floorstanders and don't require a stand. They also look beautiful, if that's a consideration.

A speaker I haven't listened to but gets consistent great reviews is the Ascend Acoustics CBM-170. It's somewhere around $300, and it's specs and measurements show that it goes about as deep as the Triangles. Check out the Soundstage review at the site below, it has measurements for the Ascends, which show incredibly flat response for a speaker at that price.
