Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Hmmm... let's see what else we can conjur up...

How about Merlins? The Merlin VSM is among the few conventional speakers that is genuinely lively and detailed at low volume levels, which is pretty rare.

Since you liked what the Eros does but would prefer a wider sweet spot, that does sort of point towards an unusually wide-pattern electrostat I happen to peddle. Shoot me an e-mail if you'd like to know more.

There are a couple of horn-based systems you might also consider, and then at least you wouldn't have to change your moniker! Classic Audio Reproductions and Avantgarde come to mind. The former will give you a bit wider sweet spot.

By the way, is there a particular reason why you prefer point source rather than line source speakers? Integrating the two (as in a hybrid) is always a juggling of tradeoffs, but a true line source speaker does have an inherent advantage in projecting a wide sweet spot. You see, above 1.5 kilohertz we determine the direction of a sound source primarily by the difference in loudness at our two ears, rather than by arrival time. Since there is less loudness difference between the left and right speaker for off-axis listeners with a line source, you get decent soundstaging over a much wider area. I can go into more detail about this if you'd like. I bring this up because you said you don't want to be locked into one spot for listening, and line sources can give you that freedom. I do a lot of "active listening" myself, wherein I jump up and dance around like a cardboard white man - but only when no one is looking.

Best of luck to you in your quest!

Duke
