Re: Bass Reproduction in Audio System

Hi

The replies to my post have allowed re-focusing what I want to discuss with you all. My points:

I do not care about one sub. I admit being an analog lover but have had to admit …..reluctantly, after the incredible realism and purity of the Burmester 979 Transport and 980 DAC combo that CD can hold its own against analog... No Flame please!! For one thing CD can keep Low (under 50 Hz) pretty separated. I do remember the specs but the degree of crosstalk in CD is constant from 20 Hz to 20 KHz and around minus 80 dB.

This brings a new demand in bass reproduction. Most so-called Full Range loudspeakers are not capable of reproducing anything under 35 Hz with any authority or faithfulness and I am being nice. There is a real shock to hear 30 Hz with accuracy and the proper level!! One suddenly realizes how much the proper reproduction of the lowest octaves bring to the music. What I am trying to entertain is how to achieve this with non-audiophile-orthodox gears. Infinite Baffle is a very interesting thing. I need the testimonials of Audiophiles who have tested or using it. Now more than ever there are many subwoofers with the specs and maybe the potential to satisfy many. I need these expereinces. HSU has been there forever and I have rarely noted experiences of audiophile using them in a their system. I was pretty surprised by Harry Pearson use and love of the SunFire True Sub and gave it a try. The thing is ON_PAPER the True Sub does not hold a candle to the SVS subwoofer; they produce more SPL, with lower amount of distortion. I have never heard one and need the input of audiophiles. HT enthusiasts focus more on the effects and not on music and the absence of reference is to me clear. An explosion is an explosion, if it shakes the room and breaks the walls it is simply a better explosion... It does not matter if the real things would not sound or explode like that...

Separated subwoofer allows the audiophile to have the best of both worlds: great bass, proper imaging and soundstage. We know of course this is going to be a pain to mate properly with mains. It may not be an issue of Monopole vs Dipole but rather of positioning and integration IMO. On the subject of the Tympani Sub, I did give a try in the early 90 with my Quad, great but not much going under 30 Hz... I have heard the Genesis 1.1 and the things that are going down low under 30 Hz add a new dimension in music, The Dynaudio Evidence both the Master and the Temptations play at a similar level and so does the Wilson X-1. When you add the XS to the equation then things take a quantum leap in term of realism and dynamic scaling...

Can one do the same with a more modest system, let us say a 1.6 QR paired a with a pair of good subs and a Behringer unit to flatten and linearize the bass, Playing the system in bass augmentation? This needs to be investigated. I am in a island albeit beautiful and my audiophiles experiment have to be carefully researched. IB look like real solution and I wonder why I have never heard of them (not heard one). At least I would have read or heard something negative. Nothing, Zilch it is as if they never existed….
Thus my need to investigate Audiophile who have augmented their system with a subwoofer system at any price… I would however like the focus to be on cost effective approaches…

Thank for the posts and I am still waiting for new ones…
