Speaker placement: does the rule of thirds always....

apply for rectangular rooms? If this is the optimum, what would be the next best option, I've read somewhere that dividing the room into fifths is acceptable? My room is 12.5x17ft, and the speakers will be on the short wall. Thanks in advance for any help!
