Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Of Tympanis, wings, and other things

Frantz,

Welcome to the Asylum! I enjoyed reading your post - you and I have similar preferences. Dipoles do it for me as well. I think Maggies are wonderful loudspeakers, and I've owned several pairs.

If you're trying to pair up subwoofers with Maggies, then Loud and Deep alone are not enough. You need excellent pitch definition as well, and as RBP points out, it's hard to get a monopole sub to blend with a dipole main speaker. I have had good results with a transmission line sub, but a dipole sub would still be the ideal.

Have you considered getting a pair of Tympani series Maggies and using them as subwoofers? You could run the 20.1's full range and just use the Tympani's to augment below 30 Hz or so.

Or, you might try adding wings on either side of your 20.1's. This is a technique Sound Lab used to employ on their A-1's to extend the bass response (no longer deemed necessary). The wings lower the frequency at which dipole cancellation sets in, and might take your Maggies down that extra half-octave or so.

In fact, if the wings work well, maybe you could even sell them as the ultimate "passive subwoofer" option for Maggie owners!

Finally, when you win the lottery, Sound Lab makes an electrostatic subwoofer that, let's just say, doesn't suck too much (disclaimer - I peddle Sound Labs... but come to think of it, they don't have a dealer in Haiti yet...). In fact, their electrostatic sub is my inspiration for the "Tympani as a sub" suggestion.

Best wishes,

Duke
