Finally got the box set (mono). Was listening to Please, Please Me. I noticed right away the compressed tone kinda unique to these early Beatles albums was missing. The original studio mix sounded like it was done on a vacuum tube mixing board pushed very close to saturation and that certain instrument and vocal notes were heavily compressed (apparent on the original vinyl or earlier MSFL CD's). These compressed notes are missing or not as apparent on the latest CD's. I kinda like the original mix, as it sounded richer and maybe more live.
It's almost as if they were shooting for more dynamic tone. But, ended up with a kinda dull, less live sound. I'd imagine that it would be very hard to duplicate a master which has clipped waveforms in certain parts of the song. The approximation by the computer program maybe dropped some of the harmonics. These harmonics are what lend the timbre and richness to the music.
Anyone else have similar feelings?Thanks!
