"WHO'S NEXT"----A little history for ya....

Hi everyone,

Boy, "Who's Next" posts are just everywhere! Even here. Well, the scoop is this:

I did it for MCA in 1985 when I worked there. They had just pressed up for release 5000 units made from the average sounding EQ copy tape, and just as MCA was about to release it, I unearthed the original British tape in a file cabinet at The Mastering Lab, where it had sat since 1971 and the first LP cutting.

Anyway, I convinced MCA Records to SCRAP their 5000 units and to go with a new remastering that I did over at Bruce Botnick's Digital Magnetics in Hollywood. The ONLY digital studio in town that was any good at that time. To their credit, MCA scrapped the first version and went with mine.

The mastering I did was used on the CD IN THE USA until the late 1980's, when a British clone of the Polydor version was substituted. After that, remaster upon remaster. Most people like the original version I did that was STRAIGHT off of the tape, bypassing the mastering console, to keep the warmth of the original mixes intact.

Wrapping it up, it was discovered a few months ago by a DCC Forum regular, that the current budget MCA CANADIAN CD version of "Who's Next" STILL USES this original mastering I did. And it's darn cheap as well.

If you want to hear it, please note that the CORRECT number is:
MCABD-37217. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH ANOTHER VERSION THAT ALSO USED 37217!

I feel it in my bones that soon this Canadian version will be, er, "upgraded" to the newly no-noised, treble enhanced, compressed version that is for sale in the USA. Get your "old" version while you can!

Hope this helps!
