Scott Matthews... Like J Buckley only better (?)

I bought an album called Passing Stranger by the above artist last weekend. Listened two or three times so far but it is enough to heartily recommend this. Maybe the best debut album I have heard since Jeff Buckley's Grace or Ryan Adams 'Heartbreaker'.

Anyway, more than coincidence that I reference the Grace album as, stylistically the similarities are fairly strong. The opener 'Dream Song' (was this an intentional Tim Buckley influenced title? not sure) has an eastern feel, created by tabla and strings and is definitely reminiscent of the fantastic 'Last Goodbye' from Grace. Also, Matthews vocal has a real, listenable quality which, although not soaring the heights young Buckley did is certainly impressive in a more understated way.

There is also a definite Zeppelin influence going on there which he shares with Buckley but I would say Matthews blues is more conventional and thus more accessible. Great player to boot with some delicious slide and great picking.

Seek this guy out if any of these artists interest you. I am convinced he has a great career ahead of him.
