Pink Floyd Musical Transition

I can’t figure it out, with most groups I can see the changes in musical style that lead from one period of their music to the next. Until recently I had not heard all of the Pink Floyd Discography. I recently got the “Oh By The Way” box set. It’s weird, at least to me in that I can’t find the transition as clearly defined that led from the earlier albums to the Dark Side of the Moon as I can with others groups. It seems their music did not really get lyrical until “Obscured by Clouds”, but even then there are only hints of the mature style that came through on the "Dark Side of the Moon". Has anyone else noted this?
