I will defer to your apparent expertise on Holden, whom I do not know personally, and did not mean to attack personally.
My point was that his positive review of the Stones performance cited above MIGHT be influenced by other factors than mere merit. My point was that, despite certain obviously assailable aspects of their stage performances, they have remained largely unassailed in the press.
Is it because reviewers are blinded by their iconic status. Or, as I suggested, might it be because of other reasons.
I think it would be naive to state categorically that reviewers are immune to these kinds of influences.
Why do I say this? Because I worked in the magazine business for 15 years. There is certainly a lot of talk about the "seperation of church and state" and other high editorial ideals. But, they are, alas, ideals.
