DUBLIN, Ireland
A spokesman says Bono is flattered by the honor of being named a knight of the British empire. Word that the Irish rock star and humanitarian would be so honored came over the weekend in a letter from British Prime Minister Tony Blair. In the letter, Blair said Bono's efforts had forced many wealthy nations to focus on increasing aid to Africa and reducing the debt of poorer nations. The honor will be bestowed during a ceremony in Dublin shortly after New Year's Day. One catch, though. Because Bono isn't a British national, he won't be entitled to use the title "Sir."
