About 10 years ago, I began selling/throwing away hundreds of CDs for the next few years in anticipation of remasters. At first I thought it was well worth it. As others have noted, most remasters are done very loudly and often my ears were telling me "louder is better".I generally agree that some remasters are better than others. I used to have those mid 80s Who CDs and replaced them with the '95 remasters and don't regret it. But more often than not, I'm finding that remastering simply implies louder and less hissy.
Even after hearing some remasters and then going back and listening to original vinyl pressings, I can't help but think "remasters" are largely a crock meant for people like me who are foolish enough to keep rebuying the same music over and over.
