Home Rocky Road

From Classic Rock to Progessive to hip hop to today's hot new tunes!

Ok, forget I asked. Here's a few...

I'll start with bands that claim to be siblings, but actually aren't. Why bother, you ask? What, you think I have something better to do? There's the Walker Brothers, the Blues Brothers, the Ramones, the Dust Brothers, the Bollock Brothers, the Sisters Of Mercy, the Righteous Brothers, Dean & Gene Ween, the Doobie Brothers, the Chemical Brothers, the Funk Brothers, the Thompson Twins, and the Jungle Brothers. Oh, and the Glimmer Twins.

Before she had a solo career, Skeeter Davis was part of a singing duo called the Davis Sisters. But they weren't related, and her last name isn't Davis. Betty Davis died, and Skeeter Davis then embarked on her solo career. They didn't record a lot; but their 'I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know' is pretty damn good. But then again I'm a Skeeter fan. In a similar musical vein, there's the case of Gram & Gene Parsons, who were not brothers, but were in the Byrds at the same time. Even more interesting is that they were also both members of the Flying Burrito Brothers, another band of guys who were not brothers at all; but not at the same time, as Gram Parsons left that band well before he died, but Gene Parsons didn't join until years later.

Similarly, Paul & Otis Williams, both of whom were members of the Temptations, were not related. Not so similarly, Bruce & Bob Kulick were both full-fledged members of the KISS universe; Bob was a roadie/tech for many years, and Bruce was an actual member for nearly a decade. I guess it beats playing with guys like Billy Squier & Michael Bolton. Yes, this longtime KISS guitarist was not only in a band with Michael Bolton, but also played on one or two of his solo recs. Can you imagine?

Then I have a few where there were people in the bands in question with the same last names, though not necessarily at the same time; in most cases I think they're siblings, but I'm not positive:

The Jive Five (Eugene, Frank, & Herbert Pitt)
Parliament (Grady & Greg Thomas)
Shonen Knife (Atsuko & Naoko Yamano)
The Ohio Players (Marshall & Robert Jones)
Tower Of Power (Bruce & Victor Conte)
The Shoes (Jeff & John Murphy)
The Chi-Lites (Clarence & Danny Johnson)
B.T. Express (Louis & Bill Risbrook)
The Vapors (Howard & Steve Smith)
Dazz Band (Isaac & Michael Wiley)
Five Blind Boys Of Alabama (Sam & Bobby Butler)

I have a feeling that there were more than a few doo-wop & vocals groups from the 50s that had siblings in them, but some people don't consider them 'bands' if none of 'em played instruments & many don't care even if they did & I'm probably one of those that don't care. And I don't really care about the Persuasions, either. However, there were a bunch of R&B, soul, funk, and even disco acts that did have siblings in their lineups, some quite prominent:

The Isley Brothers
The JBs & also Funkadelic (Bootsy & Catfish Collins)
The Meters/Neville Brothers
The Chambers Brothers
Earth, Wind & Fire (White Brothers)
The Gap Band (Wilson Brothers)
Kool & The Gang (Bell Brothers)
Sly & The Family Stone (Sly & Fred)
DeBarge
The Brothers Johnson
The Pointer Sisters...okay, I'm going a bit too far, aren't I. Um, but then there's Gladys Knight & The Pips, one of whom was Gladys' brother Merald.

I could look through my R&B box sets to try to dig out some more, but I don't feel like it right now. Okay, a couple of obvious ones:

The B-52s (Ricky & Cindy Wilson)
The Stooges (Scott & Ron Asheton)
Toto (Porcaro brothers)

And a few less obvious ones:

Marshall Tucker Band (Caldwell brothers)
Redd Kross (MacDonald brothers)
The Shaggs (Wiggin Sisters)
Bloodless Pharaohs (Brian & Gary Setzer)
Murder Junkies (G.G. & Merle)
The Hanson Brothers (not “Mm-Bop’s” Hanson, Rob & John Wright of NoMeansNo)
Big Country (Pete & Alan Wishart were original members)
The Good Rats (Marchello brothers)
The Paley Brothers
Half Japanese (Jad & David Fair)
Bobby Fuller Four (Bobby & Randy Fuller)

Oh, hell. I don't want to forget about the CARPENTERS, now, do I? Okay, maybe they're not 'rock.' But neither are the Carter Family, the Lounge Lizards (John & Evan Lurie), the Clancy Brothers, the Gatlin Brothers, the Brecker Brothers, or the Louvin Brothers, and surely they all deserve a mention. Great calls on the Collins Kids & the Blasters, too, I must say.

Delving into jazz is kinda ridiculous, so I won't do it, even though I named a few country artists where there are probably many. Good casual question. What I'll do when AMG starts charging, I don't know.
