Their first 5 or 6 albums sound horrible. I'm pretty sure (with the exception of At Fillmore East which also sounds horrid) these albums were produced in Macon under Capricorn. I'll try to nail down specific albums when I find the time but I saw an interview w Dickey Betts who was cringing when talking about the sound quality of those first albums.
The modern line up with Haynes and Trucks of both studio and live performances sound wonderful.
