most are more like Portishead that are a group of great songwriters and talented musicians that happen to incorporate an element of hiphop on some songs by having a DJ occasionally do scratches and samples. Further, there are a lot of very talented DJs who are amazing arrangers, engineers and producers.These valuable skills are lacking in your stereotypical '70s noodler. To dismiss all modern music as you did above is just as erroneous as anyone dismissing '70s guitar soloists. As was stated below, often, there are examples of amazing guitar players who are songwriters. Frank Zappa is one such example, - he also sampled.
