Specifically...why is Plant "generally awful" ? Please expand on your comments.I find Plant one of the most unaffected Rock Stars of his generation.
He has shown restraint in NOT replicating the formula of his Led Zeppelin success, by NOT engaging in repeated, meaningless, revivals of his Glory Days with the group, and doing it...which he could like Page has lately...for the Money. He could repeat all of his success, very easily, and make TONS of money doing it. Unfortunately that's what people really want, it seems.
He has matured, unlike his contemporaries, as an artist should, by embarking on his own special path, and at the same time, seeming to know his limitations.
Along with John Paul Jones, all of his post-Zeppelin solo albums, haven't been that successful, but at least he seems to have a grasp on what he can do best...interpretations of his root music...walking a thin line, and avoiding the temptations of dipping into a successful formula, and using it as a crutch, rather than as some jumping off point for some interesting and new, music.
