Re: Prokofiev Violin Concerto's

David Oistrakh is a master of these concertos, particularly the first. The best performance of his Prokofiev I own is on an old Westminster LP from the mid 50's, coupled with the 3rd piano concerto w/ Gilels. A must have.

Ruggiero Ricci has a nice version of these on London/Decca. I have it on a stereo blue back LP. Sonics are better than the Oistrakh, and the performance is very good.

I'm sure you'll get recommendations for Heifetz/Munch. He plays it flawlessly, and the sonics are excellent, but it still seems to be missing something - doesn't have the satirical bite that's necessary. It's very good, but not quite up to Oistrakh and Ricci.

I also own versions by Zino Francescsatti and Isaac Stern. I've never really warmed to Zino, and Stern misses the mark (I think the recording comes from his "Save Carnegie Hall" period, where politics took precedence over practicing).

A surprisingly good version can be found on a cheap Arte Nove CD. Some unknown (to me) Armenian violinist and Russian orchestra. Sound is pretty good for digital, and the violinist seems to have the perfect temperament for these concertos.
