Dare I stoop to retrieve it? Only if I don't bump my head on something. I'm always doing that....Let me see. There are two versions in my 1906 edition of "College Songs," compiled by Henry Randall Waite, and published in Boston by Oliver Ditson Company. The copyright dates for the previous editions are in those cursed Roman numerals--1887 and 1899. Lots of M's, D's, and C's. And an X or two. But this "New and Enlarged Edition" is 1906.
The second Bingo song is a marching song with nonsense lyrics. The first, "As sung at Brown," is the one in question. Here it is:
The miller's big dog lay on the barn-floor, And Bingo was his name; (repeat)
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, Bingo was his name.
B-I-N-G-O,
Bingo was his name. They cut him into sausage meat, And Bingo was his name; (repeat)
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, Bingo was his name.
B-I-N-G-O,
Bingo was his name. They whistled at that sausage meat; and Bingo wagged his tail; (repeat)
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, Bingo wagged his tail.
B-I-N-G-O,
Bingo wagged his tail.(Whistle the melody); and Bingo wagged his tail. (repeat)
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, Bingo wagged his tail.
B-I-N-G-O,
Here's to good old Brown, drink it down (drink it down).
Here's to good old Brown, drink it down (drink it down).
Etc.I will follow this post with comments on the melody.
