It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Janacek

There was a recent thread on Vinyl about Bartok. Into that thread I inserted a mention of my puchase of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra many years ago. On the flip side was a piece I was unaware of by a composer I had never heard of, It was the Sinfonietta by Leos Janacek.

I had mention how I though that piece was far superior to the Concerto. There were a couple responses indicating I was not the only one impressed by Janacek. Last week I found a few more pieces on LP and was even futher impressed. The new ones to me are

Idyla for string orchestra (1878)
Mladi(Youth) for wind sextette (1924)
Piano Sonata 1.X (1905)
On an Overgrown Path (15 pieces for piano) (1901-1908)
In the Mist (4 movements for piano) (1912)

Janacek 1854-1928 is a Czech composer who is heavily influenced by folk and gypsy melodies. The Idyla brought to me thoughts of Brahms, Dvorak, Mozart. Mladi (youth) was written contrary to its title in his 70th year. It sounded somewhat of a Dvorak/Stravinsky cross. I mention other composers only in a feeble attempt to describe his music. He is not a copy of anyone. He is very fresh and original.
Janacek is another of many fairly unknowns who are shockingly good.

Highly reccomended for purchase.

Regards

Steve
