Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Just finished listening to part of the “B” wide of Charlie Barnett, Big Band 1967, NOS on Crescendo records. Not sure who was the recording engineering, Tom Nola, perhaps?

Some notes – this is the kind of disk that makes vinyl worth the effort. Great soundstage, wonderful, pinpoint focus, extended low end, and the “big” sound we expect to hear from a good record (and get once and while from CDs). Of course, the best part is Charlie’s big band with hard charging solos, for example, by the Candoli’s (trumpet) and Charlie himself.

The setup: Shure V15xMR, OriginLive-modified Rega 250 (run, don’t walk!), VPI HW19Jr, Antique Audio (USA) PP-1, Cary P7, McIntosh 240, Maggie 1.5s, and HSU10 powered subwoofer. Kimber PBJ mostly.

A couple of notes: Other inmates may recall that I’ve given prior reference to Antique Sound USA (not ASL, though I like them as well). Their PP-1 is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. They make a few things, and if their other products are up to this standard, they’re one of the better bargains in tube audio.

The OriginLive arm – When I bought it, I was not sure what to expect in terms of improvement over the stock Rega I’d been enjoying. How much difference can a counterweight and some wiring really make? Well, it taught me a lesson; good design and execution in small things can yield significant results. Important to take the time to adjust per instruction – but what’s an extra hour to gain the best from our valued collection of music?

Have a great Sunday.
