Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Tchaikovsky 4 anyone?

G'day all.

Never ever did I get goosebumps because of this symphony, not even when conducted by Mravinsky or Sanderling and played by the Leningrad Philharmonic and no modern version could do the trick either and at the risk of sounding perhaps a tad too nationalistic, I highly recommend the Mengelberg end 20-ies recording with the Concertgebouworkest. The starting fanfare in the trumpets is absolutely stunning, sharply focussed and still melodious and when such a Flowerwaltz comes to drink a cup of coffee in this symphony, it really sounds Viennese, simply majestically conducted and played by perhaps the best combination of musicians in that era. Tchaikovsky sounds like a well-played Shostakovich in this recording and the Dutch homies mix up quite well the Russian and Nordic elements while giving you a blast. As the Dutch say: "From thick wood, one saws big planchets."

Now I only have to find the acoustic early 20-ies 'Les Preludes', which I'm sure Big B of course has, but now I really want to hear that recording opposed to the late 20-ies recording I already cherish.

Hopefully Tahra will dive into the archives of the Concertgebouw and release the recordings still waiting there for a company interested in these gems, because Philips doesn't exist anymore as we know it.
