I've been listening to Kevin Mahogany's "Another Time, Another Place" and I'm VERY pleased. This CD is a little commercial, but ONLY a little. Man, can this guy sing. Deep, velvet voice with excellent dexterity for scat, tempered by a serious jazz musician's brain (he apparantly was a sax and piano player at some point). On this CD, at least, he surrouds himself with top-shelf sidemen: Lovano and Chestnut. This is the guy I've been waiting for.Next, I'm gonna check out "You got What It Takes", which is also pretty jazzy from what I can gather.
His newest is forthcoming on Telarc ("Pride and Joy"). But, it looks like this is some kind of a tribute to Motown...not jazz, per se. He's surrounded by nothing but acoustic instruments, however, and it WILL have that great Telarc sound! Probably worth taking a chance -- he exhibits class and taste on "Another Time".
