Hi KMI live in-between Corvallis and Albany (North Albany mailing address, but actually live in Benton County) and yes, the line was screaming! The fish was a small 6lb hen (27 inches) but she was all steelhead. I drifted a no. 6 olive wooly bugger into the top of a chute leading down into a large pool about 6 ft deep on the Siletz River about 2 miles below Moonshine Park. The drift was about 75 feet long and she hit right at the end of the drift. Within a second or two (literally) that fish traveled those 75 feet and broke into a 6 foot leap right in front of me! She was eye-level and that ain't no fish story! No more than 2 seconds later, she broke water again back downstream where she started and in the middle of the pool to the left of the drift. I didn't know whether to strip or reel! Those fish are incredibly fast! It was all happening so quickly I honestly didn't know if the second jump was my fish or another one just playing; I still hadn't had a chance to get a tight line on her. That came a few seconds later when I felt the fingers burning! I had the drag set pretty light (I love hearing the reels sing and "singing" quaslifies this post as music right?!) and played her out for another 6 or 7 minutes. I had a 11.5 lb leader and tippet, so I brought her in before she exhausted herself - yes, I let her go. It was awsome!
BTW, the pool I was drifting into was completely packed with steelhead - I've never seen a summer run on the Siletz like this. From where I was standing at the top of the chute, at any given moment, I could see 10-15 fish all lined up in the main part of the drift waiting for goodies to wash down. In other parts of the pool, there were at least another 40-50 more just milling around and occasionally breaking water. I started fishing at 6:00 AM and caught the hen at 8:15 PM - it was a long day, but worth it.
Regards,
Allan
