I'm just getting started in this kind of music. Some of it I like, some of it I don't. The only CD I have so far is a single disc sampler that was pared down from a three disc set: China...Time to Listen or The Best of Ellipsis Arts...China(I can't really tell which is the title of the CD is from the packaging)/Ellipsis Arts CD3594. It's pretty well-recorded and appears to be about as wide-ranging as one disc of Chinese music could be(even has a track of what I guess is Chinese New Age music). A some of the instruments used are: suona(A small reeded instrument with a flared bell. I don't really like the sound of this one played as a solo instrument), xun(Baked-clay ocarina pitched fairly low about like an alto recorder. Very nice music from this instrument), yangqin(Chinese hammered dulcimer), guzheng(plucked string instrument sounding vaguely like a nasally harp. I like the guzheng.), matouqin(Bowed string instrument similar to a cello but higher in pitch. Probably my favorite along with the xun.), erhu(Bowed string intrument. A matouqin is apparently a specific type of erhu), bawu(flute-like instrument), pipa(plucked string instrument sort of like a sitar). I'm not too fond of the vocals either, but there is a Tibetan singer named Dadon on the CD who is good. She's apparently pretty famous, at least in certain circles, but I'd never heard of her. I like the Ensemble music(a mix of percussion[sounds like mostly struck metal instruments and woodblocks but I have no idea what the names of these are] with other types of instruments) on the CD best.
