I know just what you mean. The fragrance of beer should be noticeable, but not overwhelming. If it's overwhelming, that means: (1) Patrons are spilling their beer all over the place, and thus are very drunk; and (2) Nobody is bothering to clean up after them. The latter smell is readily available in the stands at any number of professional sports events.
If the predominant smell is food, you're in a restaurant, not a bar. If the predominant smell is wine, you're in the San Francisco Bay area. ;-)
