The film " Straight No Chaser " the Monk documentary certainly indicates his mental illness. I remember reading that apparently schizophrenia and bipolar were ruled out. I haven't seen the movie in over 20 years but in retrospect I have to wonder if he fell somewhere on the Asperger's spectrum. Some of his behaviors and genius are somewhat suggestive of this.
