The latest issue of The Absolute Sound has a review penned by Arthur Lintgen (a relatively knowledgeable critic, IMO) of the Maazel VPO Sibelius cycle, which has been reissued on CD/Blue Ray Audio. Highly favorable review, both for performance and sound. I have the Maazel set on RTR tape, and a few of the releases on LP as well, and I certainly wouldn't criticize anyone who prefers this cycle, which was one of the best things that Maazel ever did. The VPO might not be the most idiomatic Sibelius orchestra, and the readings are a touch muscular, but very much worth hearing.
I'm not sure I know how to play BlueRay Audio - I have an Oppo BDP-105, but use it for movies and streaming. I have a Sony XA9000ES for silver disc music. Well, heck, the LPs sound great anyway.
The other notable item in this issue is the preview of the new Wilson WAMMs, which are priced at $650,000. (!) One of my stepsons saw the picture, thought they looked cool, and wanted to know what they cost. I asked him to guess - so he said $10,000. I didn't know the price yet, so I said he was off by a factor of 10....little did I know that I was, in turn, off by another factor of 6+
I hear that the production lines for all of these high-end products are full and sold out....who buys them?
