It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

RE: How would you rate the Andrew Manze

violinist3,

How did you know ! > If you mean the concert with Richard Egarr (harpsichord) in the Music at Historic Sites series, I was there. A gambist friend from Lausanne (now producing ALL of Vivaldi for Nave Records in Paris)was visiting and knew both performers, so that was fun om several levels.

I was fans of both players anyway- I have Egarr's complete Froberger- and that was a superb concert. Although the Bullocks building is great Art Deco, the room actually was a bit featureless comparitively- certianly not as exciting as the music. Manze is a really animated player which I find a bit distracting, but the fiddling is both subtle and energetic while Egarr is restrained and methodical. That turned out to be a surprisingly good paring.

If you went to that series, did you hear Lang Lang at the Doheny mansion? In that case the music was not nearly as interesting as the architecture. I never understood Lang Lang's appeal- strange and artificial.

Another fun one was Christopher Hogwood doing a delicate Monteverdi Orfeo at the Wiltern Theater. I'd known Hogwood at Cambridge in the 70's and again at a festival in Magnano, Italy in 1993.

Seeing the King's College Christmas service was memorable too, enveloped that wonderful perpendicular Gothic and Grinling Gibbons and immersed in the rich, reverberant choir sound.

I mentioned Igor Kipnis at Princeton in 1973- helping him setup for the Goldbergs concert, and this prompted me to recall seeing him perform three times in Los Angeles, and I interviewed him and duo pianist partner Karen Kushner on the radio program I had then. We had lunch and spent a pleasant afternoon in Beverly Hills. That was only about eight months before his death.

Some good Mitsuko Uchida concerts- a student of one of my favorite pianists, Alfred Brendel, including a Mozart Piano Conc. one at Dismal Hall. Others were hearing Marilyn Horne and Gerald Moore at the Ambassador, Pasadena- I saw her four or five times, a favorite singer, and I saw Jane Eaglen at L.A. opera every opportunity. A great Gotterdammerung there too at the Dorky Chandalier as I call it.

I forgot to mention Christian Zimmermann and Ricardo Chailly doing Mozart Piano concertos at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Fantastic room around the corner from the Rijksmuseum and the VanGogh museum.

Are you performing?

Cheers,

Bambi B
