This story broke a few days ago. The new concerto, supposedly discovered in a Swiss library, will receive its first performance on Dec. 2.
I'm a bit skeptical. The concerto supposedly was composed when Mozart was 21 and living with his friend, the flutist and composer Johann Baptist Wendling.
All of Mozart's solo flute music was composed at around this time, as he had received a commission for it from a wealthy amateur. Broke as he was, he never bothered to finish the commission and in the end received less than half the agreed-upon amount.
It seems highly unlikely he would have composed but failed to submit a third concerto (in addition to the two that are known) if it could have brought him more money. The key is what is contained in Mozart's letters to his father at the time.
I look forward to hearing the Dec. 2 performance online.
