I remember reading this interview of Roy DuNann in Stereophile magazine years ago. When DuNann was informed of the florid praise that audiophiles heaped upon him and his (so-called) magical work as an audio engineer, he was embarrassed.
He simply replied, "It doesn't compute. We never tried for anything like that. We just tried to balance the instruments, to keep separation so people would think it was stereo."
LOL! Like so much in good music, good "audiophile" sound quality often comes from an instinctive feeling for simplicity and directness in communication.
I'm sure that both Roy and Rudy operated along similar guidelines of *perfection* at times.
