If a performance of Bach's B-minor MASS lacks the aspect of religious reverence... it has failed before it has begun.
That is NOT a matter of "IMHO." The essence of that specific work of art is religious belief in the context of a transcendent world view.
Everyone has the right to chose to ignore sacred music. But Bach's B-minor Mass is nothing but sacred music. So, to ask that it not be sacred is to insist that someone draw you a square circle.
