It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Analog vs. digital in Bach's B-minor Mass

Bach's B-minor Mass is on my list of great masterpieces that I just don't know. I have owned the first Gardiner recording of it, made in 1985, for a long time, but have never really gotten into the music. In general, I admire Gardiner, so thought maybe the issue was me. However, I could tell that this DG recording was not a great recording.

Given my admiration for Harnoncourt's recording of Bach's Christmas Oratorio, I wanted to hear what he could do with the Mass, which is an early HIP recording. So I ended up acquiring a virtually pristine set of the LPs.

Whatever you might think of the interpretation, and I think it is far more accessible than the Gardiner recording, there is just no doubt that the sound is so much more colorful, open, and nuanced - this 1968 recording is far, far superior to the 1985.

OK, perhaps this is a poor example. Maybe not....digital increasingly seems to me to be like 12 tone music was....a dead end.
