Prince was one of the best ever at "packaging" his music product..... He was able to present himself as a "Michael Jackson alternative", without being too much like Jackson..... Aside from that, his music never did much for me, it never struck me as having much "depth" which for me makes music "great"....... (But this is so subjective.... The person next to me might think Prince's music had "depth" in spades.... And I can't really argue.)
Genius is subjective..... Prince is original.... He's unique.... He was effective in presenting his product..... I'd give him the "genius" label, since so few artists have been able to attain all those attributes. Like Bruce Springsteen, not my cup of tea, but appreciate the body of work
